Oakland, California-based rapper Tia Nomore releases her brand-new single/music video, “Skirmish,” featuring Stoni. The track is the first of five singles from Text Me Records’ next mixtape.
The music world is fickle and competitive at the best of times, and some might argue, often one that works to and for the benefit of men. Now this might not entirely true, but certainly for many upcoming artists, finding their way in the cut-throat music industry is a challenge at the best of times, especially with the adversities women in particular often find themselves facing.
Oakland rapper Tia Nomore has been working the Bay Area circuit for a minute now. After years cutting her teeth at freestyle battles and cypher circles, Nomore's earned opening act slots for Princess Nokia, CupcakKe, and Cordae, as well as collaborations with Kehlani, IAMSU!, and Bay legend E-40.
Friend Fest is described as a "first-of-its-kind digital festival experience," aiming to connect artists and music fans from all over the world on a unique, virtual plane.
If there's one thing I've learned in the past two months, it's that a worldwide pandemic can’t stifle the artists of Northern California.
Oakland rap's little sister Tia Nomore has collaborated with big Bay Area acts like Kehlani, E-40 and has opened up for acts like Princess Nokia, CupcakKe and YBNC Cordae. Her latest single "Nu Chain" offers fans a glimpse into the limitless dexterity of the fast-rising rapper's abilities. The jazzy and neo-soul production of "Nu Chain" clears the lanes for Nomore to drop an unapologetic onslaught of rhymes through a methodical commandment of the flow and switching it effortlessly to meet her demands.
I first saw Tia Nomore freestyle at a warehouse party in Oakland about three years ago. Unbeknownst to anybody there, she was still a high schooler at the time. She grabbed the mic and dropped a rapid-fire verse a cappella, and the image of this fearless tomboy with an arsenal of witty disses stuck in my mind. So last year, when she was chosen for Thizzler's Bay Area Freshman 10 list (a yearly round-up of promising local talent that has helped launch the careers of artists like Sage the Gemini and G-Eazy), I knew my hunch about this precocious young rapper had been correct.
Tia Nomore is about to reach a higher altitude when her upcoming album Level arrives later this fall.
There are no boxes you can tick, or elements you can introduce, that’ll give you a surefire pass at gold or glory. Impossible though those metrics may be, there is quality that stands tall above the rest as the most mysterious of additions, both unfakeable and wholly unmistakable. You probably already know where I’m heading — it’s chemistry. “Skirmish” dishes that valuable asset out like it’s a dime a dozen.
